Onion plants are no longer available for 2014. We will offer them again in November/December 2015. Thanks for all the orders and good luck with your onion growing!
Onion transplants are about the size of a pencil. Prices shown are per transplant.
Onion transplants should be planted in early to mid December in the Houston area. They bulb up when the days start to lengthen in the spring and are ready for harvest in the May timeframe. Getting the proper varieties for our area is a requirement, otherwise, they will not produce bulbs. We only offer varieties that will do well here. We generally plant 30 – 60 onion transplants 4 – 6″ apart in all directions in our raised beds. Planting several varieties ensures a range of sizes, flavors, and storage life that can last until Christmas.
Fertilizer and water are important. Plan on ensuring at least 1.5 inches of water per week and fertilizing monthly. We have a balanced all-organic fertilizer that we have used on onions which does a great job. Order some to go with your onion transplants to get them off to a fast start. The larger the plant is before it starts to bulb the larger the onion will be.
We’ll be providing a complete onion growing guide on the Harvest Gardener website in the near future. Check back!
